An upright monument is a family decision, not a single purchase
An upright cemetery monument usually marks more than one person, and often more than one generation. That changes how it should be designed. A companion monument bought for two people may need room for a third name in thirty years; a family estate monument might carry six. Getting the layout right at the start is the difference between a memorial that grows with the family and one that runs out of room.
We design for what comes later. When we draw your proof we plan where the next inscription goes, leave the panel space for it, and keep the artwork file on record so a date added in 2050 matches the lettering cut today. Cemeteries in the Edmonton area that allow uprights include Mount Pleasant, Beechmount, Holy Cross, St. Albert Municipal and most of the rural cemeteries around the county.

What is included
Upright dies and bases
The die is the standing stone, the base is what it sits on. We cut both from the same granite so the colour matches, and we size the base to whatever the cemetery's setback rule requires.
Companion monuments
One monument, two names, typically 36" to 48" wide. Designed so the second inscription can be added on site years later without lifting the stone.
Memorial benches
A granite bench in place of, or alongside, a monument. Several Edmonton cemeteries allow these in designated areas, and families use them where visitors come often and stay a while.
Carved and etched artwork
Sandblasted shape carving for roses, wheat, mountains and religious symbols. Laser etching for portraits and detailed scenes on dark polished granite. We will show you both and explain which suits your image.

What cemetery monuments cost in Edmonton

Prices include the granite, the engraving and two designs. Any amount of lettering on the front of the memorial is included as long as it fits, in any language, at no additional cost. Installation and cemetery fees are not included and are quoted separately — cemetery permit and foundation charges are set and billed by the cemetery, not by us. An upright also needs a poured concrete foundation, which the cemetery usually installs and bills for.

The same people who make the monument set it. Nothing is subcontracted, which matters on a 900-pound companion stone going onto a foundation in a soft spring cemetery.
Real carving, not stickers
Shape carving is sandblasted into the granite in stages to give the artwork depth. It is slower than surface etching and it is the difference you notice from ten feet away.
A shop you can walk into
Monuments in progress are in the yard on 181 Street. Come and look at finished work at full size before you commit to a drawing on a screen.

The process
How an upright monument gets made
Design consultation
At the shop, usually an hour. We cover size, granite colour, shape, artwork, the inscription, and where future names will go.
Cemetery permit
Uprights need approval and a poured foundation. We submit the paperwork and coordinate the foundation date with the cemetery.
Proof and approval
A scaled drawing showing the die, base, lettering and artwork. We redraw until it is right.
Fabrication and setting
Ten to sixteen weeks for an upright, longer for hand-carved or estate work. Setting happens once the foundation has cured and the ground is workable.
Questions
About cemetery monuments
Can I put an upright monument in any Edmonton cemetery?
No. Many sections in Edmonton's municipal cemeteries and most newer memorial gardens are lawn-level only, which means flat markers. Older sections and most rural cemeteries around the region do allow uprights. Tell us the cemetery and section and we will confirm before you design anything.
Who pours the foundation for an upright monument?
In most Edmonton-area cemeteries, the cemetery pours the foundation and bills you for it, and our crew sets the monument on it once it has cured. A few rural cemeteries let us pour our own. Either way we coordinate it — you do not need to chase anybody.
