Cremation Memorials

Cremation still leaves somewhere to go

Roughly three quarters of Alberta families now choose cremation, and a good number of them find, a year or two later, that there is nowhere to visit. A niche plaque, a small granite pedestal or a memorial in a cremation garden fixes that. It does not need to be large or expensive to do its job.

Columbarium walls in the Edmonton area each have their own plaque specification — size, material, mounting, sometimes even the typeface. We make plaques to those specifications rather than asking the cemetery to accommodate ours. Tell us the columbarium and the niche number and we will get the requirements directly from them.

What you get

What is included

Columbarium niche plaques

Bronze or granite, cut to the exact dimensions your columbarium requires, with the mounting the wall is built for. We confirm the spec with the cemetery before fabrication.

Cremation pedestals

A small upright granite memorial, usually 16" to 24" high, for a cremation plot or a memorial garden. Some are made to hold the urn itself in a sealed granite chamber.

Bronze plaques

Cast bronze with raised lettering, mounted on granite or set directly into a wall. Bronze suits memorial gardens and civic memorials, and it ages to a dark brown that most families prefer to the new finish.

Keepsake urns and markers

Granite keepsake urns for the home, and small markers for a scattering garden or a private property memorial, engraved in the same shop as everything else we make.

Prices include the granite, the engraving and two designs. Any amount of lettering on the front of the memorial is included as long as it fits, in any language, at no additional cost. Installation and cemetery fees are not included and are quoted separately — cemetery permit and foundation charges are set and billed by the cemetery, not by us. Columbarium niche plaques are cut to the wall's own specification and quoted individually once we have that specification from the cemetery; installation of a niche plaque is normally carried out and billed by the cemetery.

Why us

Why families choose us for a cremation memorial

We get the spec from the cemetery

Columbarium plaque requirements are exact and every wall is different. We call the cemetery and get the dimensions in writing rather than working from what you were told at the time.

Small work gets the same care

A small niche plaque goes through the same proof process as a full upright monument. It is the only marker that person will have, and the size of the invoice does not change that.

Bronze and granite under one roof

We make both, so we can show you the real difference in cost, appearance and ageing instead of steering you to whichever one we happen to sell.

No cemetery tie-in

We are not owned by a funeral home or a cemetery and we take no referral commission from either. What we recommend is what we would choose.

The process

How a cremation memorial gets made

STEP 1

Tell us where it is going

Columbarium and niche number, cremation plot, memorial garden, or your own home. Each has different rules, or none at all.

STEP 2

Confirm the specification

For a niche, we get the exact plaque size, material and mounting from the cemetery in writing.

STEP 3

Approve the proof

A scaled drawing showing the layout at actual size. Space is tight on a niche plaque, so we show you exactly how the wording fits.

STEP 4

Fabrication and installation

Four to eight weeks for granite, six to ten for cast bronze. The cemetery usually mounts niche plaques; we deliver and set pedestals ourselves.

Questions

About cremation memorials

What size is a columbarium niche plaque?

It depends entirely on the wall. Common sizes in the Edmonton area run from 6" × 4" up to 12" × 8", and the columbarium specifies the material and mounting as well as the dimensions. Give us the cemetery and niche number and we will get the exact requirement from them.

Can we keep the urn at home and still have a memorial?

Yes, and a lot of Edmonton families do both. A granite keepsake urn or a small engraved marker at home works alongside a plaque or pedestal at a cemetery. There is no rule that says a person gets only one place.
