2026 cost guide
Headstone Prices in Edmonton
What a memorial actually costs here, what is included in our price, and what the cemetery charges on top.
Straight answer first
A flat marker starts at $699 and an upright monument at $2,400
Flat markers start at $699, pillow markers at $2,200 and upright monuments at $2,400 — each including the granite, the engraving and two designs. On-site engraving of an existing memorial starts at $280, restoration at $300 and a porcelain photograph at $120.
Any amount of lettering on the front of the memorial is included as long as it fits, and lettering in any language costs nothing extra. Two hours of custom artwork are included as well.
What the list price does not cover is installation and cemetery fees, and that is the part families are rarely told about in advance. Installation is quoted separately once we know the cemetery and the memorial. On top of that, every cemetery in the Edmonton area charges its own memorial permit fee, and an upright additionally needs a poured concrete foundation the cemetery usually installs and bills for.

What moves the number
Five things that change the price
Size and thickness
The single biggest factor, and it is usually decided for you. Cemeteries set maximum dimensions and minimum thicknesses by section, so your plot often narrows the choice before you make one.
Granite colour and origin
Common greys and browns from North American quarries are the least expensive. Jet black, Bahama blue and imported reds cost more, sometimes considerably. The colour changes the price more than most people expect, so we quote it before you choose.
How much is polished
A marker polished on the top only costs less than one polished on all faces. On uprights, polished-two-sides is standard in Edmonton; polished-all-sides adds to the bill.
Lettering and artwork
Front lettering is included, however much of it there is, and any language costs the same as English. What is extra is lettering on the back, a family name on a polished back at $150, and custom artwork beyond the two hours already included, at $150 per hour.
Installation and cemetery fees
Neither is in the list price. Installation depends on the cemetery, the access and the size of the stone. Permit and foundation charges are set by the cemetery, not by us, and vary widely across the region. Both are itemised separately on every quote.

The fees nobody mentions
Why the cemetery sends a separate bill
This catches almost every family, so it is worth saying plainly. When you buy a memorial in Edmonton you are dealing with two organisations, not one. We make the stone and install it. The cemetery grants permission for it to be there and, for an upright, pours the concrete foundation it stands on. Those are the cemetery's charges and they arrive on the cemetery's invoice.
Permit fees vary by cemetery and by memorial type, and an upright foundation is charged on top. Some cemeteries also charge a separate fee for work on an existing memorial, which catches families arranging a simple date addition. We find out the current figures for your specific cemetery when we quote, and if the cemetery changes them between the quote and the installation, the cemetery's number is the one that applies.
Cost questions
What families ask about price
How much does a headstone cost in Edmonton?
A flat granite grave marker starts at $699, a pillow marker at $2,200 and an upright monument at $2,400. Those prices include the granite, the engraving and two designs, and any amount of lettering on the front is included as long as it fits — in any language, at no extra cost. On-site engraving on an existing memorial starts at $280 and restoration at $300. Installation and cemetery fees are not included and are quoted separately.
How much does a headstone cost in Alberta?
Alberta prices track Edmonton prices closely, because most of the province's monument work is fabricated in Edmonton or Calgary. Our own prices start at $699 for a flat marker, $2,200 for a pillow marker and $2,400 for an upright monument, with engraving and two designs included. Rural cemeteries often charge less in permit fees than the city does. Installation is quoted separately, and the further out the cemetery, the more that costs.
What is the difference between a gravestone and a headstone?
In practice, nothing. Headstone, gravestone, tombstone, marker and monument all describe a memorial that identifies a grave, and people in Edmonton use them interchangeably. If there is a distinction worth making, it is between a flat marker set level with the lawn and an upright monument that stands above it — and that difference is set by your cemetery's rules, not by what the memorial is called.
How much does it cost to have a headstone placed on a grave?
Installation is quoted separately from the memorial, because what it costs depends on the cemetery, the section, the access and the size of the stone. On top of that the cemetery charges its own fees: nearly every Edmonton-area cemetery requires a memorial permit, and an upright needs a poured concrete foundation the cemetery usually installs itself. We set all of it out line by line on the quote so you can see what is ours and what is the cemetery's.
How long does it take to get a headstone in Edmonton?
Six to ten weeks for a flat marker and ten to sixteen weeks for an upright, measured from the day you approve the proof. Winter extends that: Edmonton ground is frozen from around late October into April, so a memorial finished in the cold months is stored in our shop at no charge and set in spring.
